What mesh size should I choose for a strainer?
It depends on what you are protecting. Pumps and general water lines are usually fine with 20 to 40 mesh. Control valves and flow meters typically want 40 to 60 mesh. Plate heat exchangers, spray nozzles and instrument lines may need 100 mesh or finer. A finer screen clogs faster, so size the strainer body generously if you go fine.
Where should a Y strainer be installed?
Immediately upstream of the equipment it protects, with the pocket pointing downwards on horizontal lines and sideways where headroom is tight, so debris collects in the pocket and not back in the flow. Leave clearance to withdraw the screen and fit a blow-down valve on the drain plug so you can flush it without shutting the line.
