Which NRV type prevents water hammer best?

A dual plate wafer check valve. Its two spring-assisted half-discs have very little inertia and travel only a short distance, so they close in a fraction of the time a heavy swing disc takes. That shorter closure time is what reduces the pressure surge. For very sensitive systems, slow-closing silent check valves or a check valve with a counterweight and damper are the next step up.

Can a non return valve be mounted vertically?

Swing check valves must be installed with the flow arrow correct and, in most designs, only in horizontal lines or vertical lines with upward flow — check the manufacturer's data. Dual plate and lift check valves are generally suitable for both horizontal and vertical upward flow. Never install an NRV with downward flow unless it is specifically designed for it.

What is a foot valve and where is it used?

A foot valve is a check valve with an integral strainer fitted at the bottom of a suction pipe in a sump or well. It keeps the pump primed by holding the water column when the pump stops, while the strainer keeps debris out of the impeller.
