A gate valve is the workhorse isolation valve in almost every Indian plant room, pump house and water line. Because the gate lifts fully clear of the flow path, pressure drop when open is close to zero — which is exactly what you want on a valve that spends its life either fully open or fully shut. What a gate valve is not good at is throttling: partly-open gates chatter, wire-draw the seat and fail early. For flow control we will point you at a globe or butterfly valve instead.

Gate Valves — common questions

What is the difference between a gate valve and a ball valve?

A gate valve closes with a flat wedge that slides across the flow and needs many turns of the handwheel; a ball valve closes with a quarter turn of a bored ball. Gate valves are cheaper in large sizes and handle slurries and high temperatures well. Ball valves seal more tightly, open and close instantly, and are the better choice up to about 150 mm where quick isolation matters.

Can I use a gate valve to control flow?

It is not recommended. In a partly open position the disc vibrates in the flow, which erodes the seating faces and causes the valve to leak permanently within months. Use a globe valve, butterfly valve or balancing valve for throttling duty.

Do you supply IBR approved gate valves?

Yes. Forged steel and cast steel gate valves with IBR Form III-C certification are available from Sant, L&T and Audco. Please tell us the boiler pressure and temperature at enquiry stage so the right class is quoted.

What is the lead time for a 200 mm cast steel gate valve?

Common flanged CI and CS gate valves up to 150 mm are usually in ready stock at our Delhi godown for same or next-day dispatch. 200 mm and above in cast steel typically takes 3 to 10 working days depending on the brand and class.
