If you need to regulate flow rather than simply shut it off, the globe valve is the correct tool. The plug-and-seat geometry gives fine, repeatable control and the seating faces are designed to sit in the flow stream, so partial opening does not destroy them the way it destroys a gate valve. The trade-off is a higher pressure drop from the tortuous flow path — acceptable on steam, bypass and control duty, which is where they earn their place.

Globe Valves — common questions

Why use a globe valve instead of a gate valve?
Because a globe valve is designed to be run partly open. The disc moves perpendicular to the seat rather than sliding across the flow, so throttling does not erode the seating faces. On steam and high-pressure water lines where flow needs regulating, a globe valve will outlast a throttled gate valve many times over.
What does 'IBR approved' mean for a globe valve?
The Indian Boiler Regulations require that valves and fittings on steam lines above certain pressures carry a Form III-C certificate from a competent inspecting authority, confirming the material and construction. We supply IBR-certified forged and cast steel globe valves from Sant, L&T and Audco, with the form issued in your company's name.
Which direction should a globe valve be installed?
Normally with flow under the seat, so that the pressure helps to lift the disc and the valve can be packed while under pressure. For high-pressure steam some manufacturers specify flow over the seat to avoid disc lift-off — always follow the arrow cast on the body.
