Butterfly Valves — common questions

What is the difference between wafer type and lugged type butterfly valves?
A wafer valve is sandwiched between two pipe flanges by long through-bolts. A lugged valve has threaded lugs cast into the body, so each side bolts independently — which means you can remove the downstream pipework while the valve still holds pressure. Use lugged type at the end of a line, on equipment isolation, and anywhere the valve may become a dead-end.
Which liner should I choose — EPDM or Nitrile?
EPDM handles water, chilled water, dilute acids and alkalis and is the standard for HVAC and water lines up to about 120°C. Nitrile is the choice where oil, grease, diesel or fuel may be present, since EPDM swells and degrades in contact with hydrocarbons. For strong chemicals and solvents we quote PTFE-lined bodies.
Can a butterfly valve be used for throttling?
Yes — unlike a gate valve, a butterfly valve throttles well between roughly 20% and 70% open, which is why they are widely used for HVAC balancing. Below about 15% open the flow accelerates past the disc edge and can cause cavitation and liner damage.
Do you supply UL/FM approved butterfly valves for fire systems?
Yes. For fire hydrant and sprinkler mains we supply UL listed and FM approved lugged butterfly valves with supervisory tamper switches, which is what most fire NOC inspections and insurance audits look for.
