Foot Valves in Delhi

A foot valve is a check valve with a strainer, fitted at the bottom of a suction pipe. It does two jobs: it holds the water column when the pump stops so the pump stays primed, and its strainer keeps leaves, plastic and grit out of the impeller. Where a pump loses prime overnight, a failed or missing foot valve is usually the reason.

Foot Valves — common questions

Why does my pump keep losing prime?
Most often a foot valve that is not holding — worn seat, debris trapped on the seat, or a valve that was never fitted. Other causes are an air leak in the suction pipework or gland, a suction lift beyond the pump's capability, or a strainer so blocked that the pump pulls a vacuum and draws air past the gland. Check the foot valve first; it is the cheapest thing to eliminate.
