Rigid or flexible grooved coupling — which do I use?
Rigid couplings hold the pipe ends in fixed alignment and behave like a welded joint; use them for the bulk of a riser and wherever the pipe must not move. Flexible couplings allow a few degrees of deflection and a little axial movement, which lets a long run absorb thermal expansion and lets a building move in an earthquake without tearing the pipework. A typical layout uses rigid throughout with flexible pairs at changes of direction and at building expansion joints.
Are grooved joints acceptable for fire hydrant systems?
Yes, where the couplings and fittings are UL listed or FM approved for fire service — that is what the fire NOC inspection and the insurance surveyor look for. Unlisted grooved fittings on a fire line will be objected to, so specify the approval you need at enquiry stage.
