How steel pipe is priced — and why quotes differ

Pipe is traded by weight against the mill's ruling price list, not by the metre. Two quotations for "2 inch pipe" can differ by 25% simply because one is Class A and the other Class B — same outside diameter, different wall thickness, different weight per metre. Before you compare prices, convert both to a rate per kilogram.

Because mill prices are revised frequently, every quotation we issue carries a validity date. Ask us for rates on the day you intend to order rather than working from a month-old figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you cut pipes to length?
Yes, we cut in-house. Standard supply is 6 metre random length; if your cutting list needs 3.2 metre or 4.5 metre pieces we will cut them for a small charge, which is normally cheaper than paying for offcuts you cannot use on site.
Can you arrange third party inspection on pipe?
Yes. We regularly supply against orders requiring inspection by agencies such as Lloyd's, TUV, BV or SGS, and against government and PSU inspection requirements. Tell us at enquiry stage so the inspection cost and lead time are built into the quotation.
What is the difference between nominal bore and outside diameter?
Nominal bore (NB) is a designation, not a measurement — a 2" NB pipe has an outside diameter of 60.3 mm, not 50.8 mm. Outside diameter stays constant across classes and schedules while wall thickness changes, so the internal bore shrinks as thickness increases. Always order by NB plus class or schedule, and if you are matching an existing pipe, measure the outside diameter and tell us that.
