Balancing valves let the commissioning engineer set a measured flow rate at each branch using the pressure test points, so the system delivers the design duty instead of an accidental distribution.

Balancing Valves — common questions

Is a balancing valve the same as a butterfly valve set part-open?

No. A throttled butterfly valve has no way of telling you the flow rate through it, no memory stop to hold the commissioned setting, and no test points. A balancing valve is designed to be run partly open, has a measured relationship between handwheel position and flow, and can be locked at the commissioned setting so a cleaner or fitter cannot casually alter it.
