Stainless pipe is specified for one of three reasons: corrosion, hygiene, or appearance. Grade choice follows from the medium — 304 for water, food and general service; 316 wherever chlorides are present, including coastal air, swimming pools, and most chemical duty; the L grades where the joint will be welded and you want to avoid carbide precipitation. Schedule 10 is thinner and considerably cheaper than Schedule 40 and is adequate for most low-pressure utility work.

Stainless Steel Pipes — common questions

Should I use SS 304 or SS 316?

Use 304 for potable water, food contact, general indoor service and architectural work — it is roughly 25 to 35% cheaper. Use 316, which contains 2 to 3% molybdenum, wherever chlorides are present: coastal locations, swimming pools, cooling towers dosed with chlorine, seawater, brine, and most chemical processes. Specifying 316 unnecessarily wastes money; specifying 304 where chlorides exist causes pitting within a year or two.

Is ERW stainless pipe as good as seamless?

For low and moderate pressure utility service, modern ERW (welded) stainless pipe to ASTM A312 is entirely adequate and considerably cheaper. Seamless is specified for high pressure, cyclic or code-governed service and where the customer's specification simply demands it. We will quote both so you can see the price difference.

How can I be sure the grade is genuine?

Ask for the mill test certificate with heat number, which we supply as standard, and match it to the marking on the pipe. For critical work, an on-site PMI (positive material identification) gun reading takes a minute and settles the question — we can arrange this.
