GI Pipe Fittings — common questions

What is the difference between malleable iron and cast iron fittings?

Grey cast iron is brittle and will crack if a joint is over-tightened or knocked. Malleable cast iron is heat treated after casting so it has real ductility and impact strength, which is why IS 1879 fittings — the ones marked GI in the trade — are malleable. Never substitute a plain cast iron fitting on a pressurised threaded line.

Do you supply ISI marked GI fittings?

Yes. The GI fittings we supply carry the ISI mark to IS 1879 along with the galvanising standard. This matters for government and institutional work where third-party inspection checks the marking on every fitting.

What sealant should be used on GI threaded joints?

PTFE tape for water and air up to moderate temperatures — three to five wraps in the direction that tightens. For hot water, steam or where vibration is present, use an anaerobic thread sealant or a jointing compound with hemp. Avoid excessive tape, which can split a fitting when torqued.
