Use our section weight calculator. Enter the two side dimensions, the wall thickness and your total length, and it returns kilograms per metre and total weight. It corrects for the rounded corners real IS 4923 sections have, so it matches the mill's published tables — the simpler sharp-cornered formula found on many websites overstates weight by around three percent, which on a twenty-tonne order is not a rounding error.

Are section pipes sold by weight or by length?

By weight, at a rate per kilogram or per tonne against the mill list, plus GST. That is why thickness matters so much commercially: the same 50×50 section in 3.2 mm weighs about 23% more than in 2.6 mm, and costs accordingly.
