Plug valve or ball valve for bitumen?

Plug valve, without hesitation. Bitumen and tar will pack the cavity around a ball and around its seats, and after a handful of cycles the valve will neither seal nor turn. A lubricated plug has a tapered metal-to-metal seal maintained by sealant, with no cavity to pack, and it can be jacketed so the media never cools inside it.

Do lubricated plug valves need maintenance?

Yes, and this is the trade-off. Sealant has to be injected periodically through the fitting on the top of the valve — how often depends on duty and temperature. Skip it and the seal degrades. If you want a fit-and-forget valve on clean media, a ball valve is the better choice; if the media is dirty, the maintenance is worth it.
